Durex's Eggplant Condom Joke | #CondomEmoji | Advertising

Posted 7 years ago

Do you like your condoms flavored? Well some do, and that’s what Durex caters to. They have fruity flavors like strawberry, grape, orange etc. Now, what if Durex said they were going to launch one in an eggplant variant? Baingan – Ewwww! Right?

That’s how everyone on Twitter reacted. Some were in shock, some laughed it off enquiring if they could have spicy flavored condoms too now.

Well for all those wondering if Eggplant is actually Durex’s new flavor, you’ve been duped into thinking that. Don’t worry, most of us believed it too.

Here’s the actual story behind the Twitter-drama!

Durex is retaliating against the Unicode Consortium for rejecting it’s request last year for a condom emoji. And this eggplant campaign was a ploy to get everyone talking about safe sex and the #CondomEmoji request.

According to Durex’s research, 84% of 16 – 25 years olds have said they felt more comfortable talking about sex using emoji’s.

Durex’s #CondomEmoji campaign started last year when they launched a social media campaign asking people to RT their posts about their emoji request on Twitter, and to use the hashtag #CondomEmoji as much as possible.

Here is one such video they used:

‘'Durex knows there is no place for an eggplant when it comes to safe sex. It is just as questionable, in fact, as a decision not to introduce a Safe Sex Emoji to empower young people to talk about sex, safely, in a language they are comfortable with'’ said the company.

While the Indian society might be a whole different ball game where talking about sex is concerned, how do you feel about Durex’s #CondomEmoji campaign? Should the Unicode Consortium accept their request?

  • Minal BPosted 7 years agoI guess in this time and age the #CondomEmoji is perfectly fine, but maybe the consortium thinks that having a emoji would make them look bad in so many country very talking sex is even taboo. (Even in most parts in India). So maybe the General consensus was to deny the motion to have a #CondomEmoji thinking "what purpose does a CondomEmoji have? If people wanted to talk about sex they simply sext it or send snaps, how would a common emOui help?" I personally have no issues if there would have been one Maybe have it for a trial and error basis.

  • munish kumarPosted 7 years agovery good app for safe sex idea
  • Jimmy JoyPosted 7 years agoI personally don't think that talking about sex is a big thing these days, even in India. Most schools have started sex education, the types of movies shown have a lot of youngsters exposed to sex at a very early age. I think we need youngsters to be well versed with the pros and cons of sex. Having said this, i don't know how a condo emoji create awareness at all. I mean if I want to talk about condom I will simply type CONDOM, also if I want to use the word condom without my elders knowing it, I surely won't use a ComdomEmoji but maybe some other coded emoji or a word. Since most society/country have taboos the Unicode Consortium is right to deny Durex keeping in view the majority of the countries.
  • Jyoti julka sharma Posted 7 years agoSuperb idea...#CondomEmoji ..there is nothing to shame or feel embarrassed about this topic. ..yes this the real cool idea of safe sex.i am definitely supporting this..this will aware people that condom is the real super hero of our life which protects us from some very major diseases 😎

  • BideshPosted 7 years agoAlthough #CondomEmoji sounds good but it will have more cons than pros. Especially a lot of guys will send to unknown numbers. (girls) and resulting blocks. Since there is no strict IT law a lot of people (perverts) will have the liberty to use these emojis randomly for sex.
  • vaibhav kumarPosted 7 years agoIt's good to spead all over world for safe sex, it's very necessary
  • K ShivakrishnaPosted 7 years agoI wont support this. When you keep this emoji for some one it will be awkward . Even if there is a some situation they can talk or chat about it. but this icon will surely gets bad impression on the person

  • dineshPosted 6 years agoI actually don't know what to comment here .but its always good to go with the right.just because of something wierd it sounds we cannot straightaway refuse this idea.purpose is very clear to promote safe sex.its good durex is taking such a big step knowing that it can be back handedly commented.sex emoji.....like any other idea is opposed but it will take sometime to adjust in society seeing different mindset of people .motive is good so I feel that this experiment should also be done on social sites with consensus of mobile owner .problem of unsafe sex is widespread and it can be only contained by some revolutionary steps like such....

  • Melvin TomPosted 5 years agoMind blowing, Boblastic and supercool ad. Really loveed it.
  • Deborah dohlingPosted 5 years agoYea its true that talking about sex is more comfortable when referring it with emojis like brinjal, apricot or is it pear ? Lol it makes it fun without actually having to go red faced or even feeling uncomfortable .However the consortium perhaps felt that using emojis is a way of sexualising the subject like non veg jokes or so we call it ,everyone to their own ,I wouldn't have a problem but probably if my mum saw a Brinjal emoji while watching her soaps she may be offended
